I took my job in the mill for granted, granted I loved my job and always performed at my peak but when graduation rolled around and we were rotated out of the work roster, Let's just say finding another source of employment has proven to be very hard, I'm still unemployed. No longer bank rolling a modest steady source of income things were definitely different. I no longer had the luxury of buying a new pair of shoes every six months, a new hat every couple of months, a couple pairs of jeans every quarter. Thankfully I'd never had a huge addiction to video games because new ones were out of the question and trips to the ski hill became the equivalent to buying a diamond engagement ring...not that I've every bought one. These things were not so bad until the winter of 2009 came around and I found myself without a winter jacket and trying to make due with spring windbreaker, it didn't do much in the way of breaking wind however. I caught a break that winter putting together a few edits for cash. I bought a decent jacket at 60% of from the season before, just in time for the worst of winter. Once college came around every cent from my tax returns became book fees, college fees with a little left of some small christmas gifts and snowboarding became a fantasy, it still is and it tears me up listening to friends talk about there trips and all I can say about my weekends were I watched a Clint Eastwood marathon on AMC and went job hunting.
Even though I was dealt a pretty mean hand in the last few years and I'm still rotating between 1 pair of Jeans and 2 sets of tracksuit pants, my impact was cushioned by things afforded to me by others. Etnies stepped up with a couple pairs of shoes and sent a new hat, Sanbon Pro Apparel, Free2Ride Action Apparel and Omega Attire hooked up a few t-shirts while M(t)theory sent out a shirt. Even though they were sent out because of a few video edits I'd worked on or some level of promotion I set up for them. Those were things that really lifted my spirits.
I sit back and I think about what I've dealt with, what I'm dealing with and realize I have so much compared to a lot of people. There are children in North America going to school on empty stomachs, children all over the globe going to school without so much as a pencil, There are children who will never see a christmas gift this year. There are people who are starving all over the world and those who don't have coats during the winter and some who have no sweaters. There are those walking around barefoot while a lot of the world are disappointed over their new shoes being ReeBok and not Gucci.
Alone, I can't do much but together we can do a heck of a lot. See that little green and red box. It's from Operation Christmas Child. It's a box you fill for a boy or a girl with small toys, socks, tooth brushes and even small shoes so somewhere a kid'll have something this christmas. I've been doing it for years now and it's really fun to put them together and you feel ten feet tall when it's finished and ready to be shipped. There are currently 300 followers on my twitter even if half of them do a box, 150 kids will get one.
